Labrouste made an invaluable impact on 19th-century architecture through his exploration of new paradigms of space, materials, and luminosity in places of great public assembly. The two magisterial glass-and-iron reading rooms he built in Paris gave form to the idea of the modern library as a collective civic space. Sure, they were made much later than Labrouste’s drawings, but they do an excellent job of showing the various conditions structure, services, systems that are behind and below the surfaces that have rightfully attracted so much attention over the years. For example, digital projections and laser-cut models communicated the scale, composition, and spatial configuration of the libraries.
These ephemeral marks of paint structur ornament traced on this everyday landscape undermined the classical ro inherited from Johann Joachim Winckelmann, which championed a view of monumental antique architecture assembled from milky white marble.
