Edward Gorey’s mordant masterpiece The Wuggly Ump charts the fate of three wholesome children whose happy days weaving chains of flowers are cut short. “Sing tirraloo, sing tirralay, The Wuggly Ump lives far away.” That is one of my favorite beginnings to an Edward Gorey book. This is one of my favorites of Edward’s. Don’t open the door for strangers. This follows a group of happy little children, as they weave chains of flowers and eat their bread and milk.
My first and favorite Edward Gorey book. This book is printed in three colors like The Bug Bookbut the colors were added at the printing stage and not on the original artwork.
Only Edward Gorey knew for sure, but this is the only book that this rare creature appears in.

Little care was taken to use the infill of color to any great effect. One of his step-mothers was Corinna Mura, a cabaret singer who hhe a brief role in the classic film Casablanca. Although he would frequently state that his formal art training was “negligible”, Gorey studied art for one semester at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago ineventually becoming a professional illustrator.
The kids are eaten at the end.
