Are the anecdotes authentic and representative of most women’s views? I think it’s safe to say I was not the target audience for this book but after reading the author’s other work I figured I should give it a shot. It has been correctly described as the “Sex and The City- The Middle East style” and it had me laughing out of my wits at various points. If you’ve read her graphic memoir you would already know that Marjane Satrapi was born in in Rasht, Iran. Paperbackpages. Almost all are about sex and while men are usually bad, the women are also silly, overly romantic and as often victims of their own weaknesses.

Her other works had more unity and a sense of purpose – and the pictures were expressive and interesting – this is simply a snapshot of stepped upon, crass, embittered Iranian women yapping about stupid men being stupid.

Not sure if I’d be comfortable recommending it though. See 1 question about Bordados…. Wasn’t quite sure either the complexities of what she was trying to say about feminism vs treatment of women in the Middle East.

Thanks for telling us about the problem. Not at all like Persepolis, even though most of the characters are the same. This is not to say that Satrapi failed at what she set out to do. Marjane Satrapi, back in the graphic novel format she mastered in “Persepolis”, paints a humorous portrait of the intimate lives of Iranian women. This conversation really hit home for me. There’s nothing extremely special about that. And then there’s the Bechdel test. It’s about normal women who have adapted to oppression and learned how to expertly hide who they really are.
Rocio Duque rated it did not like it Apr 22, I have to say that it actually made me happy in part to know that women the world over no matter how repressive of a country they live in still found time to be normal women.
However, there is a certain style of storytelling and perhaps the drawing that I’m not too fond of. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

Read Persepolis, skip this one. To put it plainly, Embroideries was all I could have wanted from Marjane Satrapi and yet Audible Download Audio Books. However, I personally couldn’t get past the cissexism, heterosexism, and the uncritical perpetuation of the hymen myth. Every marjaane communicating something about the person beneath. The only complain I have with this book is that it is too short. Bagaimana dengan jahit selapur dara?
Want to Read saving…. While I like the idea of weaving together these overheard conversations, I couldn’t get past the gay-comic-relief bits.
Satrapi offers up unique points of view in her varied Iranian female characters and serves up borddaos enjoyable, thought-provoking read. The conversations in this book reminded me of that except, in this book they talked more about S-E-X. I have to say, the book does portray the relationships between men and women and their mother in laws, marriage, etc quite accurately. I suppose one might find this super quick read interesting. I’ll still read her other book about Iran, “Chicken with Plums” and hope that she’s returned to her evocative story-telling. Bechdel’s drawings have to be pored over and admired at length. But it wasn’t what I expected.
Even though they were talking about sex, I was bored. It was funny at times but I feel Satrapi needs to stick to a storyline and developing single characters. There is something about a group of women sharing intimacy and gossip.
