No other book on the art of theatre comes even close to offering this much understanding, experience and inspiration. The Diredtor Books of Thanks for telling us about the problem. While it does contain practical advice for directors, I would recommend this book to any performer or artist.

In the second chapter, Bogart argues that interesting theatre demands a “violent” decisiveness on the part of the director, and her concept of violence in the theatre is similar to Artaud’s concept of cruelty. I often return to her writings.

One of the recurring themes is embracing doubt, uncertainty, and resistance and learning to work with and through those forces. Resistance should be cultivated. Anne Bogart has a way of stealing all the good ideas about art one almost anje to have, and articulating them better than one could ever hope to.
In fact, when his analyses do not draw on Bakhtin, Brecht, or Barthes, they often make effective use of other writers’ theoretical concepts, such as Derrida’s repetition. Creativity occurs in the heat of spontaneous interaction with set, known, common forms. Each chapter tackles one of the seven major areas Bogart has identified as both potential partner and potential obstacle to art-making. I don’t recommend this to people who are seeking working knowledge, but those who need a little pep talk, it is okay. Overall i A Director Prepares by Anne Bogart was one the first of the three books that I have read and I have got to say that this may be one of my favorite books that I have read recently.
